Root

Pronunciation: /rut/ Explain
  1. A root is a number that, when it is substituted into a polynomial, makes the polynomial equal to zero. Example: 2 is a root of x2x – 2 since 22 – 2 – 2 = 4 – 2 – 2 = 0. For more information see Roots of a Polynomial.
  2. A root is a number or expression with a fractional exponent. Examples: square root of 3 equals 3 raised to the one half power., cube root of 4 equals 4 raised to the one third power..

    Definition: the a root of b equal c if and only if c raised to the a power equals b; b raised to the power of one divided by a equals c if and only if c raised to the a power equals b.
